Windows Vista and Nero

There’s been a lot of internet “chatter” about Nero 7 not working with Vista, so I thought I’d share how my mate got it working. It wasn’t easy by all accounts, but it does work given a little patience!
The first thing you need to do is turn off User Account Control (UAC). UAC is the new security system in Vista that runs your Desktop session with the least privelidges possible. It’s a complicated (and sometimes very annoying) way of protecting your system from unauthorised changes - I’ll be explaining it in detail soon.
So, back to the Nero. You need to turn UAC off in order for the install to work, which you must do from the User Accounts Control Panel (Start > Control Panel > User Accounts). Click the last link on the User Accounts page, “Turn User Account Control on or off”.
NOTE: UAC will pobably kick in at this point and ask you to confirm this action. If so, click the “Continue” button.
Untick the “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer” check box, and click OK.
Next, install Nero 7. This installation will probably still fail, but that’s ok.
There is an update to Nero 7 available from Nero.com to allow it to work with Windows Vista, which you should download and install next. It’s quite big (about 190mb, so if you have a slow connection it might take a while!!).
When this update installs, it picks up the Nero 7 installation, and basically sorts everything out.
And that’s it! Nero 7 should be up and running in Vista. Remember to turn User Account Control back on when you’ve finished. It may be annoying, but it does have it’s uses!
